1. What is the CALL Vocational & Life Purpose Guide?

    A. What is The CALL and why was it created?
The CALL Vocational & Life Purpose Guide is an online assessment which was created to help Christians discover and make better choices in their career, life and relationships.  The CALL incorporates a spiritual gifts dimension into a highly reliable, Biblically-based validated "whole-person" assessment tool.

    B. Who is Get On Purpose?
    Get On Purpose, LLC
is a co-developer and exclusive provider of The CALL  and is a Strategic Business Partner of Profiles International, the assessment technology company powering this assessment.  We are dedicated to providing you with reliable and valid insights into your career and life purpose.  We also provide individualized coaching and consulting services for organizations.  For more information, Click on our About Us tab.

    C. Who is Profiles International?
Profiles International is a leader in design, validation and delivery of on-line assessments, and is a co-developer of The CALL.  As a strategic business partner with Get On Purpose, they provide the assessment technology and resources for delivery of The CALL.  For more information, go to www.profilesinternational.com.

    D. How is The CALL different from other career assessment tools?
The CALL Vocational & Life Purpose Guide combines four assessments into one.  Unlike other popular assessments, it is a “whole-person” tool that gives you insight into your spiritual gifts, occupational interests, personality and behavior and thinking style. It’s one of the most complete, valid and reliable assessments available today.

For more specific information, read our free resource "9 Criteria for Choosing An Assessment."

    E. What are 'Reliability' and 'Validity' and why are they
    important in assessments?
'Validity' means that the assessment actually measures what it is intended to measure. Many other career assessments were designed and created for reasons other than what they have been marketed and used to do.

Reliability means that the assessment is consistent over time.  If you take an assessment today you should get roughly the same results if you take it again in the future.

For more info about reliability and validity, check out our free resource, "9 Critieria For Choosing An Assessment."

The CALL is backed by some of the most reliable and highly validated assessment technology and methodology available.  It is designed to accurately provide you with information about your occupational interest, thinking style, behavior and personality, your Job-Fit and your Life Purpose.

    F. How do I know The CALL has good predictive validity
    and reliability?

The Thinking Styles, Behavioral Traits and Interests sections have been validated by Profiles International using hundreds of thousands of participants. Average reliability is above .8 for these scales. Anything above .7 is considered reliable.

The Motivational Gifts section is an ongoing validation in the last few years having examined thousands of participants. Average reliability is also above .8.

Once good reliability is established, good validity can be demonstrated by matching top performers to our benchmarks.

2. Taking The CALL

    A. What is the recommended minimum age for taking The CALL Vocational and Life Purpose Guide?

We recommend the assessment for those who are at least 16 to 17 years old.  While there are some exceptions to this, our research indicates most high school juniors or seniors have the necessary verbal and numeric education to answer the questions. They will also have some background from which to answer questions involving personality, interests and gifts.

    B. How long does it take to complete The CALL?

The CALL takes about an hour to complete. We strongly recommend that you find a quiet time when you can complete the assessment without interruption. However, if you get interrupted, you can return at a later time and pick up where you left off.

Yes.  Be sure to write down and remember the user name and password you create when you register, and keep this information in a safe place where you can refer to it later.

    F. Are there different versions of The CALL for professionals, career changers, parents, students, ministry, etc.?
No, there is only one version of The CALL Vocational & Life Purpose Guide but the report is personalized to you, based upon your answers to the questions.  The questions are the same for everyone taking the assessment.

Other assessments designed specifically for professionals, career-changers and business purposes are available, however.  Just go to our On Purpose Enterprises website at www.onpurpose-ent.com for further information about assessments and services for your business or organization.

If you’d like more specific information about The CALL, or a sample CALL  report, go to our website at www.getonpurpose.com

    G. Why are spiritual (motivational) gifts part of The CALL?
Unlike most other popular assessments that don't even address this aspect of how God "wires" us, The CALL was developed from a Biblical perspective, specifically for the Christian marketplace.  We believe that everyone has at least one motivational gift, which give us extra motivation and greater satisfaction.  The Bible says that we are to use our gifts to honor our Creator and to fulfill our purpose by serving others. Your motivational gifts are very important in understanding your life purpose.

    H. Why are there math and word problems in the assessment?

Sometimes people are resistant to taking any assessment that measures math or verbal skills.  It's important to understand that The CALL is not a "test."  You can't "flunk" being you.  The CALL is an assessment that can give you insights into the kind of education or career that is right for you.

Research shows that if you have a job that is a close match with your math and verbal capabilities, you will probably be competent at that job, which would most likely cause you to enjoy it, as well.  Some of the questions in The CALL  measure your problem-solving ability with math and verbal concepts, and other problems measure how well you can reason, using the knowledge you have.

When your job is a close match to your thinking and learning styles, you'll tend to enjoy and be good at it.

Many popular assessments do not measure your math and/or verbal skills, and may lack reliability and validity as a result.

    I. How many questions are in The CALL?
In order to establish higher reliability and validity, there are three hundred and five questions in The CALL. These questions provide you with a valid measurement in twenty seven different dimensions of your gifts, abilities, personality and interests. There are seven sections of questions in The CALL.

3. Pricing and Ordering The CALL

A. Why do you charge for The CALL when other assessments are free or less expensive?

There are literally thousands of other assessments available today.  Many are free or very inexpensive.  The CALL is competitively priced with most popular career, interest or personality assessments, but it gives you far more information for the same price.

The CALL provides the most valid and reliable assessment available today, and the only comprehensive "whole-person" assessment designed for the Christian marketplace.

Here are 7 reasons that The CALL gives you more value for your investment.

  1. The CALL has been thoroughly tested to ensure quality and accuracy of results. Many commonly used low-cost or free career assessments and tests lack “predictive validity” (accuracy of results). Many are not even statistically validated. As a result, they can lead you in the wrong direction.
  2. The CALL is more comprehensive than other popular assessments, measuring twenty seven distinct dimensions, including your Thinking Style (cognitive abilities), which is the single best indicator or predictor of job success. Many popular assessments completely ignore this measurement of your abilities, which may lead you to choose a career that is a complete mismatch of your talents and abilities to your job.
  3. The CALL measures the seven spiritual or “motivational” gifts, as defined in Romans 12.  Most commonly used assessments employ secular methods or “pop psychology”, which are at odds with a biblical Christian worldview -- and they give you no insight into your spiritual gifts. We believe that understanding and using your spiritual gifts has great value, both practically and spiritually.
  4. The CALL is priced competitively. Other sophisticated assessments used by career and counseling professionals can cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars, while giving you no virtually insight into your spiritual gifts or many of the dimensions measured by The CALL, like Thinking Style or Job-Fit in Ministry Occupations.
  5. The CALL can help you make better career choices and achieve more job satisfaction by using your God-given strengths, abilities, and gifts. Your career choices have practical, spiritual and financial consequences. Studies show that over 50% of currently employed people would change jobs today if they could. We think this is a waste of your time and talents. Over their lifetime, the average person will make over a million dollars. It makes economic sense to choose a job that is right for you.
  6. In order to make the assessment a useful and valuable experience for you, we’ve taken over four and a half years to develop The CALL, including research and validation, technical programming, customized reporting and development of all the necessary web-based resources.
  7. We understand that other assessments are available for free. However, we think that The CALL provides you with more value, career direction and depth of insight into your God-given life purpose than any other tool available today.

6. How to get the most out of your CALL report
(To view a sample CALL report, click here)

A. Will my scores change over time?
It is highly unlikely your CALL scores will radically change over time, with one exception.  It is not uncommon for an individual's interests (see "Your Occupational Interests" section of your report) to change over time.  For instance, a person who is 35-40 years old will probably have interests that are quite different from those they had when they were 16-18.  More reliable predictors and characteristics (see "Your Thinking Style" and "Your Personality and Behavioral Traits" section of The CALL report) will generally not change substantially over time.

B. How will The CALL help me determine my life purpose now that I have completed The CALL?
The 7 motivational gifts listed in Romans 12:6-8 (see the "Your Motivational Gifts" section of your CALL report) reveal our natural path to spiritual maturity and to understanding our God-given purpose. Since we are created by God, and given gifts for accomplishing His purposes, it follows that our purpose is then to use those gifts for Him during our lives. Listed below is a short statement of general life purpose for each of the seven gifts in Romans 12.

  • Prophesying: boldly and persuasively standing up for truth
  • Serving: helping to expedite practical tasks for others
  • Teaching: researching and explaining the truth
  • Encouraging: offering uplifting and positive hope through faith
  • Contributing: finding and generously providing needed resources
  • Leadership: orchestrating people, resources and tasks for results
  • Showing Mercy: providing emotional support to others

While anyone can grow strong and mature in all seven of these "Jesus-like" characteristics, one or two will remain constant and dominant throughout your life.  When you learn and use your dominant motivational gifts, you will feel the most satisfied, be the most productive and be on purpose. That's a better way to work and live.

C. Where can I learn more about the Motivational Gifts listed in   Romans 12?
The following are excellent resources to help you gain insight into your motivational and spiritual gifts. Some of our favorites include:

  • Any translation of the Bible
  • The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, Zondervan, 2002
  • Unraveling the Mystery Of the Motivational Gifts by Rick Walston, Xulon Press, 2002.
  • Ministering Through Spiritual Gifts, Recognize your Personal Gifts and Use Them to Further the Kingdom by Charles Stanley, Thomas Nelson publishers, 1999
  • Any of the books by Don and Katie Fortune. (http://www.thefoundationonline.com)
D. How can I use The CALL to get my ideal job?

Start by studying your CALL results thoroughly.   Consider showing your report to your career advisors, and using the services of a good career coach.

To help you in your search, check out our free resource "Understanding Job-Fit—The Key To Your Ideal Career."

Your personalized CALL Report also gives you many specific suggestions for careers in ministry and common occupations.  Use the free link to the O*Net in The CALL to explore your specific career options, based on your closest job-fit matches.

There are no guarantees for success in this life.  Rather than just taking any job, or staying in a career that is unfulfilling, invest the time necessary to make wise career decisions.

E. Why should I consider using a Career Coach?

Even the most successful professionals and athletes use personal coaches to constantly improve, to be disciplined and to keep themselves at the top of their form.  A good personal coach will help you gain important insights about yourself and make better choices for your career and life. Scripture supports the use of wise counselors.  A skilled counselor/coach can help you create an action plan based on your CALL report.

Go to www.getonpurpose.com and click on the Services tab for more information.

F. How can I use my CALL report with my resume and job search?

You may find it beneficial to show the Your Job-Fit In Common Occupations page of your personalized CALL report to a prospective employer to support your interest in the job or career for which you're interviewing.

NOTE: A word of caution here: because of the faith-based wording in The CALL, you should use your discretion in what pages you show a prospective employer.

7. Tips for taking The CALL

A. Is there anything that might create a problem, skew the results or create incorrect scores in my assessment report?
Use of calculators, dictionaries or help from others is discouraged, and will only result in an inaccurate report.  Answering questions dishonestly, trying to give an answer that might appear more “acceptable” or just guessing at answers instead of doing your best to correctly answer questions can also provide inaccurate results.

B. Are my scores likely to change over time?
It is highly unlikely your CALL scores will radically change over time, with one exception.  It is not uncommon for an individual’s interests (see “Your Occupational Interests” section of your report) to change over time. For instance, if you are now 35-40, you may have interests that are quite different from those you had when you were 16.  More reliable predictors of your job success and satisfaction (see “Your Thinking Style” section of your report) will generally not change substantially over time.

C. Do I have to answer every question?
No. Just do your best to answer all questions to the best of your ability.  Section 1 allows a total of seven omitted answers. Sections 2 and 7 each allow a total of three omitted answers. However, if you exceed the maximum omissions allowed, the system will not permit you to continue until you have provided more answers.

D. If I am unable to complete the CALL, can I save it and come back to it later?
Yes. Be sure to write down and remember the user name and password you create when you register, and keep this information in a safe place where you can refer to it later.

E. What is the best way to answer questions?
The CALL is not a "test” and you can’t flunk being you. So, you should provide honest input and answer all questions to the best of your ability.

Of the seven sections, Sections 1, 2 and 7 have no "right" or "wrong" answers.

Section 1 has 142 "yes" or "no" questions. Respond with the answer that first comes to mind that is true more than half the time.

Sections 2 and 7 are "forced choice" questions in which you must decide between two different activities. In some cases neither option will appeal to you, and in some cases both options might appeal to you, however, please use the "two-second rule" and go with your first impression that is true the majority of the time. Our research shows that this method produces more valid results.

Sections 3, 4, 5 and 6 involve word usage and number calculation. You may use pencil and scratch paper for calculations. However, f you use any other tool such as a calculator, dictionary, word finder or outside help you will distort your results and they will not be accurate.

F. Can I go back and change my answers?
Once you click on the “Complete” button at the end of each section of questions, you cannot change any answers. Prior to that, however, you may review all your answers and make changes.  Once you have completed the assessment, you may not go back or change any of your answers.

G. Why are there math and word problems in the assessment?
Research shows that math and verbal skills are very useful in predicting job satisfaction and success. For example, if you have a job that is a close match with your math and verbal capabilities, you are more likely to enjoy and be competent at that job.  Some of the problems measure your ability to remember things you probably learned in school.  Other problems measure how well you can reason based on the knowledge that you have.

H. Is there a time limit for completing the assessment?
No. Take as long as you wish. Most people finish in about an hour. We highly recommend that you find a quiet time when you can complete the assessment without being interrupted.

8. What is the O*NET online?

A. What is the O*NET?

The Occupational Information Network (O*NET) is a comprehensive US Department of Labor database of worker attributes and job characteristics . As the replacement for the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), O*NET will be the nation's primary source of occupational information.

O*NET is being developed as a timely, easy-to-use resource that supports public and private sector efforts to identify and develop the skills of the American workforce. It provides a common language for defining and describing occupations. Its flexible design also captures rapidly changing job requirements. In addition, O*NET moves occupational information into the technological age.

It provides the essential foundation for facilitating career counseling, education, employment and training activities. The database contains information about knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs), interests, general work activities (GWAs) and work context. O*NET data and structure will also link related occupational, educational and labor market information databases to the system.

O*NET may be used to:

  • Align educational and job training curricula with current workplace needs
  • Create occupational clusters based on KSA information
  • Develop job descriptions or specifications, job orders and resumes
  • Facilitate employee training and development initiatives
  • Develop and supplement assessment tools to identify worker attributes
  • Structure compensation and reward systems
  • Evaluate and forecast human resource requirements
  • Design and implement organizational development initiatives
  • Identify criteria to establish performance appraisal and management systems
  • Identify criteria to guide selection and placement decisions
  • Create skills-match profiles
  • Explore career options that capitalize on individual KSA profiles
  • Target recruitment efforts to maximize person-job-organization fit
  • Improve vocational and career counseling effort

9. About Job-Fit Percentages

A. What do Job-Fit percentages mean?
For more information about Job-Fit, read our free resource "Understanding Job-Fit—Key to Your Ideal Career."

B. How are the Job-Fit percentages calculated?
For more information, read our free resource "Understanding Job-Fit—Key to Your Ideal Career."

C. What if my highest Job-Fit score is less than 70%?
Everyone has at least one job in the world where they are a high job fit compatibility percentage.  If you have very few job matches above 70%, don’t be discouraged.  It’s very possible that one of the following explanations may be true for you:

  • Identify the closest job-fit matches to occupations from your personalized CALL Report, then use your free link to O*Net to explore similar or related careers.  There are probably many more career options than are shown in your basic report.

  • You may not be well-suited to any of the common occupations listed in The CALL report, which are a sub-set of all occupations identified in O*Net. You may be more ideally suited to work in a rare and less common occupation.  If so, a career coach or other professional advisor may be useful in finding the occupation that’s right for you.  Pay extra attention to your gifts, thinking style, personality and interests.

  • Your Call scores may be inaccurate.  If you were not relaxed or able to fully concentrate when you answered the questions, or if you used calculators or someone else’s help in answering the questions, your report may not provide an accurate picture of you.  The seven sections of the assessment usually take about an hour.  If you answer on a random basis, but not a thoughtful basis, this can throw off the overall scores, especially on the sections with numbers and words.
